Margerison in the news

David Margerison in Leeds Adel HC kit

The Sunday Telegraph of 28 March 2021 printed an article under the title Rule of six-aside: Why it's never too late to take up a team sport (link: subscription required) featuring David Margerison. David joined us in 2006 and at 76 is still going strong.

Johan Herbert 1930-2021

Johan Herbert, a well known, friendly face at tournaments all over the world, passed away recently at the age of 90. The Alliance International Hockey Club was Johan's brainchild, after Johan formed a team of mixed nationalities to take part in the first Grand Masters World Cup in Kuala Lumpur in 2002. Johan became its first president and represented the club, the only multinational member of the World Grand Masters Hockey Association, for many years. He would often turn up at tournaments on his own, knowing that, as a goalkeeper, he could usually help out a team with no keeper. Scottish Thistles were privileged to be invited to Johan's 75th birthday tournament in Kortrijk, Belgium, the highlight being the half lobster, washed down with red wine, provided between matches at lunchtime on the Saturday. He will be sadly missed.

Adrian Stephenson, Secretary of WGMA, gave this tribute to Johan.

All at WGMA are very sad to lose one of our first WGMA Members of Honour and someone who was one of the most enthusiastic pioneers of Grand Masters hockey. Without Johan’s infectious love of the game and his refusal to allow age to be a barrier to playing on into our later years many of us might have hung up our boots some time ago.

Johan will be remembered with great affection by all of us who played with and against him. His legendary hospitality and that of RHC St Georges, at the events that Johan organised at the club, will forever live in the memories of those who were lucky enough to have been there.

RIP Johan - one of the great characters in the game.
